Wandering into sound

For the next few class periods we are going to be dealing with sound art.  We will spend most of our time in class dealing with the particulars of the technology and the parameters of the project.  I am not sure what examples, if any, we will see.  So, if you have time, you might want to check the following things out.

First, this is work by Allora and Calzadilla.  While not all of it is specifically sound related, it is a key component of the work.  We will watch this one in class if we have a chance, so you might want to hold off (or you can just watch it twice!).

Second, this is work by Ann Hamilton, who is actually a professor on campus.  Sound is also very important in her work but it is not the dominant component.  I think it would be useful to watch this video and look at the way her work involves senses in general.

This is work by Janet Cardiff, a Canadian artist.  I will play a little bit from her in class so this is just a reference beyond what we will here.
This is Sudden Infant/Joke Lanz.  He uses the sounds of his body as a performance piece.  This is truly insane and I might show this if you are feeling sleepy.
Have fun with this one and take some risks!
